About

Thibault Noirot, wildlife photographer, black and white portrait

Wildlife photographer · Paris 20th

Thibault Noirot

I photograph wild birds and mammals, most of them a few steps from my door: the parks and cemeteries of eastern Paris, the Bois de Vincennes, and a few escapes to the coast.

Every image takes waiting, silence and many returns to the same place. That time spent watching, far more than the equipment, is what makes the picture.

Who I am

I am a sound engineer and developer, trained at ENS Louis-Lumière in Paris. I work in cinema, in sound editing and mixing, and I build tools for listening to the living world.

Wildlife photography arrived in 2021, when I was mostly trying to record the birds of my own neighbourhood. I built a homemade parabolic reflector to catch their songs from a distance, then took the habit of carrying a telephoto lens on the same outings.

A member of the LPO, I learned to recognise species by ear as much as by eye. I publish this sound and image work under the name La Science Musicale.

Microphone and camera serve the same purpose: stay at a distance, disturb nothing, let the animal live its life.

My approach

Photographing wildlife in the city is a way of showing that the wild is not somewhere else. A robin in Père-Lachaise or a kingfisher on a canal bank is worth a distant expedition. No image is made in captivity, and none with baiting.
